Just joined. I saw a comment talking about a guy on a red bike with a white helmet being antisocial (not giving a nod). Probably me on my orange Not a Mercian wearing a helmet after a series of bad crashes. I'm not antisocial may have just missed the guy flying by. I'm seeing more and more riders out on fixeds and I usually always give a nod. I think it's important, a nod always brightens up my day.

I know the guy on the Rizla and often get him in to town and back in the evening. Couriering may seem a cool profession but imagine 50 miles a day in searing heat or horizontal icy rain. I managed a fortnight before jacking it in ten years ago. I tip my hat to all these guys and gals.

I ride time trials in Auldhouse and sometimes use my fixed for a laugh. I think one of these Rollapaluza sort of evenings would be great in Glasgow. Anyone know a pub that may be supportive?

Nice to speak to you all anyway. See I'm not antisocial!!!

    Have a look at: http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2006/june/BryanCarroll.htm http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/2004/g/carroll.htm

I've seen the 'not a mercian' on fixed gear gallery before. I hadn't seen your Mercian though. I didn't know that the Common Wheel would sell frames, I thought they insisted on doing complete builds, nice frame for £50.

I did buy it as a complete bike with old Weinmann brakes, steel wheels with gubbed spokes, atrophied rubber tyres, cotterred cranks... So I upgraded parts - the bottom bracket stripped the frame after about six months so I had to fit a second hand Mavic threadless. The Mavic bearings have stripped recently and I searched all over the internet including bearings firms for the correct size. I've had no luck and my bike now runs with a crap YST which will last a year if I'm lucky. I'd like to hear from anyone with a Mavic or the bearings for sale.

I see the blond girl and her extremely narrow cut bars every morning around Stow College and always say hello she seems to be a really nice person. I see loads of guys out there now on fixeds including new models like Specialized, Genesis, Charge and I like the Lemond that I saw recently etc... There also seems to be a lot of old steel frames with horizontal dropouts and gear hangers. I believe our own personalities are expressed through the set up of our infitely diverse and imaginitive fixeds. I'm now expressing my squareness linked to advancing years through full SKS mudguards to keep me arse dry over the winter.

Yesterday (New Years Day), early afternoon, on the road between Lennoxtown and Kirkintilloch: an older guy on a bright orange what I assume to be fixed.

I've seen him a few times in that neck of the woods, always doing a good clip, but he's always going in the opposite direction to myself, so I've not had a chance to give more than a nod and a shouted greeting.

Nodded to a guy with some mad hair and rolled up jeans as I passed him on the Squinty Bridge. Matt black fixed with no decals. Only the second fixed rider I've seen since I've stopped riding singlespeed.

Also, riding fixed is the cure to the common cold.

krakow:Yeah, I've seen the Rizla bike many times - does anyone know the owner? I saw him stopped outside the GOMA the other week for a coffee and read of the paper and though I stood about to admire the bike a little I didn't go up and say anything as I thought it would be incongruous since I wasn't on my own bike at the time.

Hello Krakow yeah i know the owner of that Blue Rizla bike,or at least i did a long time ago,the owner goes by the name of Ped,he lives in a small dwelling on the edge of the Jundland wastes, the bike i believe is a FORT track frame, aluminium in construction, miche crank 47t /17t rear cog, mavic wheels built by master Gow/wheel craft,Milton on campsie, old school racer bars upside down and cut down to size,Armadillo 700*25.tyres.Dirt harry brake lever/Shimano Sora brake.Fizik Arione saddle.Think he found his decals on ebay,http://www.decals4less.co.uk/

He's is fairly friendly and approachable,im sure he would be up for a talk if confronted, although i would possibly be forearmed with a yum yum/or bun of equivelant delicousness. i think he is a courier although he's probabilly forgotten that now, it was such a long time ago when he started down that road,i think he was planning another career but time passed by and he forgot what it was.

He's been stopped many times in the street and asked about his bikes, quite often by venerable men,who once rode fixed Flying scots, mercians and the like in their day before their spines became to crooked, the only people who he wont give the time time of day to is chuggers as they once saw his bike being bolt croppered away, out side Borders and didnt have the bottle to confront said neds/c*nts.

Anyway young Krakow ride safe my boy....see you on the road.

yeah that was me! spotted at last. i was just out for wee blast round glasgow before the weather turned. i think when you passed (guy in red and one in black?) i was tinkering with my headset (steerer needs about 1mm or 2 cut off it and makes a knocking sound somehtimes). did you also see the guy going into town on one of those old style french bikes with the beret on at a juanty angle?

it could only of been about a minute before you passed me if that poss even 30 seconds or so. maybe it was because of the speed you an mr hotdog were going at that you didnae see him...was quite an interesting site at the back of nine on a saturday morning in glasgow. think he may of been a postie as he did have a royal mail style shoulder bag and was in navy blue gear.
