Anyone up for going up a bit earlier? Going up an hour before loss of light seems a bit mental really.

I get the feeling the chosen time was picked to get the best light for photographs, seeing the event is being organised by a photographer.

More important is the temperature of the canal.

It doesn't really matter. If you fall through it'll be almost impossible to get back to the point at which you went through the ice and equally as impossible to break through from underneath.

The most important question is "How thick is the ice?"

    Yeah

I know all that I was just genuinely wondering how deep the canal was!

I think a better question would be 'how thick do I need to be?'

Aye just cause it was safe with a few folk doesn't mean it'll be safe with freaking loads of folk. Spoze the danger is part of the fun though.

Unless the temps drop right off again tonight I recon it's a bit too risky.

Gives the ice all day to thaw, so the guy can get dramatic shots of people crashing through and drowning.

I think it's pretty deep at Maryhill Basin. I was out Ice Skating on the Lake of Menteith today. I met a guy from my work and had a shot on his bike. I was riding about the lake on a full suss Canondale with ice skates on.

I too will be going to watch tomorrow.

the temp has been about 4C all day and there are noticable signs of thawing. i wouldnae fancy my chances on the ice with the temp rising. might still take a swing by to see if anyone still fancies there chances.

I drove past a couple of times, didn't see anyone, but I did notice one of the locks was more water than ice.

I took the kids ice skating on the pond at Victoria Park instead.
