    Seen this? http://velonews.competitor.com/2009/10/news/i-wanted-to-teach-them-a-lesson-road-rage-trial-resumes_99513

Horrible story. Can in no way justify the actions of the driver, but, having experienced mental drivers a few times, I think a lot of incidents can be avoided by not responding to aggression aggressively.
A few months ago I was riding through Paisley with a friend and we nipped through a red at a junction at the same time as a car with speeding through off an amber light. We comfortably moved over to let him through and waved to 'apologise' after his many horn blasts. After 500m of swerving and braking infront of us he swerved over in the middle of a dual carriage way, walked out into the middle of the road and stood in front of us a as we were oncoming at 20mph, along with the heavy traffic behind us. He was one tiny wee jake but went totally mental at both us. Basically taunting a physical reaction, something I wasn't going to do in the middle of Paisley surrounded by Paisley drivers. Luckily he found an outlet for his rage through is death face she witch in the car and we got on our merry way to a lovely ride to Bute.

Point being, we avoided confrontation. I've discussed traffic rage with people at length, some thinking that angry drivers need to be made an example of but I think that aggression should be avoided as it only incites further rage.

I like to assume that all drivers are testosterone-fueled animals that could snap at any moment. I try my best not to piss them off but even then, sometimes the angry neanderthals still get angry. In these cases I just put it down to high cortisol levels as a child leading to an aggressive personality (or perhaps just no sex recently).

agree with nmk. If you shout and get mad at every arsehole on the road then you'll end up one yourself. just have a wee chuckle to yourself about how small their cock must be.

That's a great point. There are some cyclists I've seen who get almost more enraged than the car drivers.

I think everyone goes through a "if you shout at me, I'll shout at you phase" for a brief period before realising it doesn't help. When you realise that nothing you shout at them can make them more considerate drivers you just learn to ignore them, or in rabsda's case, to think about their small penises.

My problem is that the anger comes out like a reflex when someone scares the shit out of me, I think it's the adrenaline or something. It is true that it rarely makes a difference to shout, unless the person has made a genuine mistake in which case they will usually apologise anyway. I find that most incidents occur as a result of a driver doing something deliberately. For example, if they have seen you and just decide to pull out anyway. I frequently make eye contact with drivers to find that they do something potentially dangerous. In this case, you can't change the driver's attitude by shouting.

sometimes a bit of cathartic rage is needed or just happens. I've been there many a time. I'm trying to be more zen like about the whole thing these days though.

It's like the magnatom videos on youtube, he always comes off as a fanny when he looses the rag

Anyone who rides with two video cameras strapped to himself is obviously looking for trouble.

i don't think that's true. Given that he cycles to work and back every day and always records it and posts every incident... The number of incidents he posts isn't that high.

But still. There's no denying that he must look like a bit of a tool with 2 cameras attached to him.

That is ridiculous, classic response from the white van man though. I like how he just carried cycling towards the old granny and made her run, what a bastard.

It's never acceptable to continue on a course that will result in passing within 30cm of someone, regardless of whether or not they should be there. If child runs out into the road to get a football without looking would you happily continue over the top of them?

Just because some road users (and pedestrians) are careless, that doesn't mean that you have to feign carelessness in an attempt to teach them a lesson. If the only other options was to risk your life by swerving into the other lane where there may be cars, then it's a different story. Mow that granny down!

I can't stand that self righteous arsehole. Although I do think drivers should acknowledge cyclists presence more on the roads, the fact remains that we're not cars and Scottish roads, for the most, are not designed to accommodate both at different speeds.

He just gives cyclists a bad rep.

Agree, and I cycle to the Southern or other Glasgow Hospitals daily, never had problems like these. He needs to calm the fuck down. It may be a re-examination of his cycling style might be required also.
