im new to this forum , ive been looking at a single speed for a while now, and i kinda like the 'genesis day one' . im just wondering if anyone has any experience with genesis or even with that bike. is it worth getting as a first single speed?
A few folk have Genesis Flyers on here and they seem like really good OTPs, the day one is more of a cyclocross bike. Depends on your riding style but i imagine it'd make a good commuter/town bike less so long rides? Stick some slicks on it and a bigger gear and it'd be good to go though. Seems like a great all rounder and have seen a few good reviews.
I love the orange one.

I've a Flyer frame and forks built up with some of my own stuff. I like it......

Me too.
Mine that is............
I like the Day One , only thing missing is some Irn Bru decals instead of the genesis ones :-)
As other's have said. It's more of a single-speed cross bike. You should go into Gear or Behind Bars. They both sell Genesis bikes. You should have a look at this and also at the Flyer which is a very popular choice among Glasgow fixed-gear cyclists.
Welcome to the forum.
I have seen one of these locked up a couple of times recently. I stopped to admire it the first time, looks like a nice machine...and I like orange bikes!! I am also a Genesis Flyer owner and would recommend them.
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
im a fan "Genesis" is the nineteenth episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation's seventh season, which first aired on March 19, 1994. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Data return to the USS Enterprise to discover the rest of the crew de-evolved into more primitive forms of life, including spiders, amphibians and cave men.[1] The episode is the first and only to be directed by Gates McFadden,[2] who portrayed Dr. Beverly Crusher, and was written by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and writer Brannon Braga.[3] Its title refers to Genesis, the first book of the Christian Old Testament and Hebrew Bible.[4]
The given stardate is 47653.2,[1] the year 2370.[5] Worf fires a torpedo that veers off course during weapons exercises, and Picard and Data leave in a shuttlecraft in order to retrieve it from space.[4] Data leaves his pregnant cat, Spot, with Barclay. Barclay, a hypochondriac, visits Crusher, who gives him a synthetic T-cell to activate one of his dormant genes. However it has the undesired side-effect of activating all his dormant introns. The crew begin to experience strange symptoms.[5] Worf becomes aggressive and feels hot, while Deanna Troi feels cold. Crusher examines a silent Worf in sick bay and notices a venom sac on his neck, whereupon Worf sprays venom (it is not clear if this is inadvertently or deliberately) at Crusher, injuring her severely. As a result of her injuries, Crusher is placed into stasis.[3]
When they have retrieved the torpedo from space, Picard and Data return to find the ship adrift, with the main power off-line. One of the bridge officers is dead, torn open in his seat,[6] and most of the crew are de-evolving. Worf has reverted into an aggressive predator attempting to mate with Troi; Riker a caveman; Troi an amphibian; and Barclay a spider.[3] Picard is overcome by irrational emotions of fear and anxiety, indicating that he has been infected, and Data suggests he might soon de-evolve into a primate similar to a lemur or marmoset. Picard and Data return to Data's quarters and find Spot and her kittens. Spot herself has changed into an iguana, however the kittens are normal.[7] Data recommendeds that they locate Nurse Alyssa Ogawa who is recently pregnant. While in sickbay, Worf attempts break through the doors searching for Troi. Data concocts a pheromone spray from one of Troi's sebaceous glands, and Picard uses it to distract Worf and lead him off through the ship, so Data can work on the cure. Worf eventually catches Picard in a narrow crawlspace and the Captain uses a power cable to incapacitate him. Meanwhile, Data finishes the construction of the modified retro-virus and releases it into the air which returns everyone to their original state. At the conclusion, Crusher names the condition 'Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome', after its first sufferer.]
*Disclaimer* I had to go here I'm sorry
I'm a big fan of Genesis (Greek: Γένεσις, "birth", "origin") or Bereshith (Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית, "in the beginning")[1] is the first book of the Hebrew Bible, and the first of five books of the Torah, called the Pentateuch in the Christian Old Testament.
The narrative runs from the creation of the world to the descent of the children of Israel into Egypt and culminates with the death of Joseph, and it contains some of the best-known biblical stories, including Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel, and the patriarchs of the Jewish people.
For Jews the theological importance of Genesis centers on the Covenants linking Yahweh (God) to his Chosen People and the people to the Promised Land. Christianity has interpreted Genesis as the prefiguration of Christian beliefs, specifically the Christian view of Christ as the fulfillment of covenant promises as the Son of God.
Structurally, Genesis consists of the "primeval history" (chapters 1–11) and cycles of Patriarchal stories - Abraham, Isaac and Jacob/Israel.[2] The narrative of Joseph stands apart from these. Scholars believe that it reached its final form in the 5th century BC, with a previous history of composition reaching back possibly to the 10th century
The Book of Genesis
King James Version
001:001 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
001:002 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was
upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon
the face of the waters.
001:003 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
001:004 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the
light from the darkness.........
Damn it you beat me to it Doh...
Gene Siskel, born in Chicago, attended Culver Academies, graduated in Philosophy at Yale University in 1967, where he studied writing under Pulitzer Prize-winning author John Hersey, who helped him land a job at the Chicago Tribune in 1969.[1] In 1975, Siskel teamed up with Roger Ebert, film reviewer for the Chicago Sun-Times, to host a show on the local Chicago PBS station WTTW which eventually became Sneak Previews. Their "thumbs-up, thumbs-down" system soon became an easily recognizable trademark, popular enough to be parodied on comedy shows such as In Living Color and in movies such as Hollywood Shuffle and Godzilla. Sneak Previews gained a nationwide audience in 1978 when it was carried on PBS.
i almost bought a genesis flyer instead of a pista. From having a go on a few other folks flyers they seem nice
krakow:I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual.....
More prog rock than artsy and the story of each is in the lyrics. The real change was on And Then There Were Three, a good album with the eternal classic and first major hit "follow you follow me".
Go backwards from here to Wind and Wuthering with greats like "your own special way" and "blood on the rooftops" onto A Trick Of The Tail and back to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. A seminal masterpiece of an album that saw theatre take to the stage (it really should have been a film). I'd still put Selling England By The Pound way up there as my favourite Genesis album.
Phil Collins did one good solo album, his first, Face Value. Of the rest there were some interesting singles, "you can't hurry love" and "against all odds".
All in my opinion only of course, for what it's worth....
Maybe I should have picked this video to illustrate my point better...
Hi there - first post after months of guest lurking. Got a 2008 (black) Day One in October through C2W from Gear & swapped the knobbly Continental tyres for Schwalbe Marathons. Rode Edinburgh Coop bikes (cheapo Contour 200/300) and a Ridgeback Tempest before this so I appreciate the lightness (2nd floor tenement) and speed. Handlebars seem a little wide though for weaving through traffic but great for my commute and getting round town. 46/18, and with a bit of encouragement (and better weather) I will change from ss to fixed shortly. In the meantime you can spot me around the southside. Not a Phil Collins fan though.
I'm a fan of the Sega Genesis also known as The Mega Drive which is a fourth-generation video game console released by Sega in Japan in 1988 and Europe in 1990. The console was released in North America in 1989 under the name Genesis, as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region. The Mega Drive, heavily marketed as "16-bit" due to its hardware, was Sega's fifth home console and the successor to the Sega Master System, with which it is electronically compatible.
The Mega Drive was the first of its generation to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America. It was a direct competitor of the TurboGrafx-16 (which was released one year earlier in Japan under the name PC Engine, but at about the same time as the Genesis in North America) and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (which was released two years later). The Mega Drive began production in Japan in 1988 and ended with the last new licensed game being released in 2002 in Brazil.[3]
The Mega Drive is estimated to have sold 39.70 Million units worldwide,[cn 1]making it Sega's most successful console. The console and many of its games are still popular today: Some games have been re-released in compilations for newer consoles and/or offered for download on various online services, such as Xbox Live Arcade and Virtual Console. The console is also still popular for fan translations[9] and indie game development.
Sonic/Golden Axe/Spiderman

This is one of my favourite scenes from any movie. Ever! I actually bought Fore! as a direct result of watching this movie. It's the pride and joy of my music collection.

Don't forget Roadrash and Bomberman.
Road Rash was class. Had to go to my mates to play it (I was stuck with Enduro Racer on the 48K+).
buy genesis - cheap, made from propper steel, comfy, good geometry. Been hammering mine for a year and a half and its still as good as new
Back on topic I love riding my Day One. Compared to the Tempest (heavy!) it's really nippy and I don't miss gears at all. Still a bit wary of going fixed though but I guess that's why the flip-flop hub exists.
i had a look at the flyer , looks reasonable. ill need to look properly nearer the time of actually having the money. and since it will be my first single speed road bike, i actually dont know much about parts etc, so ill need to wait and see, what the guys in gear bikes tell me. :) looking forward to getting one tho.
They've got last year's day one in the front window of Gear with some money off, It's 350. Nice looking bike. Black by the way
That's where I got mine (for a bit more) on Cycle to Work scheme (I incorrectly said it was the 2008 model earlier). They also do a free 4 week tune-up on it. Have time tomorrow and I am contemplating trying it fixed. (N.B. 23/01/10 2009 model has a freewheel hub only).
Question for you all - is it simply a case of flipping the back wheel around, removing the rear brake and ensuring the chain isn't slack? May be a silly question but I'm not a mechanic or self-build guy, but want to learn a bit more about maintaining my own bike. Any extra tools required? Ta much from the noob.
you don't need to remove the brake.
I think someone on here had a chainline issue when changing to fixed. Just make sure you check the chainline when you make the switch and you'll be golden.
Thanks so far for comments (just cycled into work from my flat). Just didn't know if the entire board would say, "Take it to a shop!" or not. I only know one guy who cycles fixed at my work and he has a teenage son and they both cycle/race etc, proper enthusiasts. He said go for it, you'll never look back.
Any friends of mine that cycle ride geared bikes, so they're not much help. Seeing as it is a Genesis Day One I was keeping it in this thread, and I'll do pics asap. Any other tips welcome.
seeing as i was thinking on getting a new bike , thought id go out for a a wee run on my dads old trek

this isnt the exact one , same frame etc.
actually so unfit
cycled about 10 miles all in , and after about 3 years of not riding , its murdering me .

I saw one of these in Alpine on Sunday, quite smart in my view...
Aye - a bit more flash than the all black one (mine). Saw one chained up at Blythswood Sq. the other day.

I've had more than a chainline issue, a sort of 'don't have a flip flop hub' issue. I'll give you all a moment to stop laughing.
(I edited my previous post). Now have 46/18 fixed Day One (Surly flip-flop hub) and have spent the last 2 lunch breaks getting the hang of it. Will put pics in new members section too. Here's some advice given to me by a colleague, "One tip is don't go for too big a gear especially at first. I started with 46/18 (69inch) but actually dropped it to 46/19. I've got mates with 85 inch gears. I think they're mad the whole point is to learn to spin. Its dead easy to change the gear anyway it's half the fun".
Have learned lots surfing the forum. Thanks for a great resource!

I'd say a good range is between 69" and 76". I used to run 72" which I thought was the best everything but now I'm on 74" and I've noticed that I spin at the same cadence but just go faster. If you use a gear which is too low, your natural cadence will prevail and you'll just ride around everywhere quite slowly.
More discussion on ratios can be found here.
