Challenge Ride
51 milesThe classic freshnlo Pedal for Scotland ride, the challenge ride is now in its 12th year. The 51 mile Glasgow to Edinburgh ride is Scotland's biggest bike ride and attracted 7000 participants last year.
The reason for the ride's huge popularity is the combination of a great route that uses a mixture of closed roads, quiet back roads and cycle paths and the fact that it takes in Scotland's two largest cities via stunning countryside. It's the perfect challenge for both regular cyclists and those who haven't cycled in a while - a few weeks training is enough to get in shape. There are rest stops around every ten miles serving free refreshments, plus a free lunch at the beautiful Linlithgow Palace, topped of with entertainment and activities at Victoria Park in Edinburgh, making for the perfect active day out for groups of friends, family or work mates. Transport can also be booked to get you and your bike to the start, or home from the finish.
Sportive Ride
100 milesThe freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Sportive is a brand new ride of 100 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The final route will be announced very soon - so watch this space. The Sportive is a much more challenging ride for regular cyclists. Expect some challenging climbs, great scenery and a route that will push your endurance to the limits.
The Sportive will use the same start and finish points as the Challenge ride but will take a completely seperate route to give riders a much tougher challenge. The transport service will serve Sportive riders too, meaning there is an easy and hassle free way to get you and your bike to the start in Glasgow, or back home from Edinburgh at the finish.Family Ride
3 mile circuitThe freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Family Ride is a brand new event for 2010, especially for families with young children or those new to cycling.
A 3 mile off-road circuit around Glasgow Green will give riders the opportunity to participate in a cycling event without any contact with traffic, with a host of music, entertainment and activities to ensure a great day out for families. Best of all the ride is completely free - so head to the registration page now and sign up.
Who's up for the sportive then?
Obviously they had heard we weren't impressed with the 50 mile challenge last year.
But aye, I'm up for the 100 mile sportive, geared I think though.

Yeah it'll be geared for me too. I don't think I want to do 100 miles on fixed-gear again.
Fuck it. I'm in. Fixed.
Sportive route there & back right? ;-)
krakow:Fuck it. I'm in. Fixed.
Sportive route there & back right? ;-)
Ha. That'd be insane.
I'm up for geared this time for a wee change. Me and mad euan were in a two man breakaway for a large part of the ride last year on fixed so i think i'll go geared if he is.
rusty:
Ha. That'd be insane.
You're tempting me even more. Sportive there and straight cycle back is also a possibility. 150 fixed miles. If I start thinking seriously about this it could happen. I hate using public transport.
If you start training for it now, 150miles fixed is doable. Its dependant on the climbs though, 150 miles is an audax distance and you have men and women aged 60+ doing those
euan:150 miles is an audax distance and you have men and women aged 60+ doing those
But again. It's totally dependent on the climbs. I'm assuming we'll be wanting to as early as possible so this gives the most time possible to complete a there and back. It's not for me though. I'd prefer to kill myself over the first 100 miles than to pace myself over 150.
If it is a challenging 100mile route surely the tak or something is on the cards
rabsda:If it is a challenging 100mile route surely the tak or something is on the cards
Yeah I think it might be there. That'll be where I regain any time I've lost.
i doubt it, can you imagine how much of a pain in the arse the tak would be with hundereds of cunts on it going at different speeds. nightmare
I can imagine the 100mile route is going to be for the more hardcore lot, it still might be a nightmare amongst those who just can't climb.
Considering it's the first year they're doing it I think it will be a bit of a fiasco but a fun fiasco. People always overestimate themselves
True that. I'd still want to do the 100mile route as early as possible to cut through the rabble. Considering how narrow the Tak is, I don't want to have to contend with people stopping infront of me.
any idea on the date of it? Tak has to be in the route, its really one of the only decent climbs on the route.
I'm saving for a geared bike just now, so if i can buy something before then.. i'll do it.
It'll be on the 12th of September i think. As for what Euan said. I'd hate to have some idiot just stop right in front of me. An early start will be a must for the 100 mile ride. As will some good bunch riding skills to keep a nice speed just under 30mph on the flat.
I've had someone stop infront of me during a climb two years ago. It was fucking deadly. Though it is always full of idiots, like the guy who barged into me and required me shoving him back to stop him knocking me over.
Three mile family fun route for me. Geared. On a side note, although this should probably be in the training thread maybe; Does it make sense to be riding around getting ready for the Evans sportive thing on fixed and then do the event freewheel? Should I just man up and do it fixed on the day?

Do you mean freewheel as in single-speed or geared? I'd not want to go up the Duke's Pass twice on fixed or single-speed.
I'm meaning single-speed. I'm thinking of maybe doing the medium one instead of the long one though as have barely been out much since New Year because I'm a skiver. I've only the got the one bike so it'll have to do.
I'm up for sportive, geared. I'd get bored doing it fixed. Got the bug after doing the Etape at the weekend. Some of those roads on the route are pretty shite i.e the first 45 miles! But it would be fun if it was a few of use.
im up for sportive
Sportive Ride
100 miles
The freshnlo Pedal for Scotland Sportive is a brand new ride of 100 miles from Glasgow to Edinburgh. The route takes riders through the Southern Uplands and down into Ediburgh passing through 7 local authorities and incorporating the best sections of numerous Scottish cycle racing circuits, including the A77 10 Mile Time Trial, sections of the Moscow APR and the Strathaven Anderside Classic, incorporating steeps climbs around Muirkirk and undulating stretches across wild moorland . The Sportive is a much more challenging ride for regular cyclists. Check out the route map in the side panel opposite.
The Sportive will use the same start and finish points as the Challenge ride but will take a completely seperate route to give riders a clear run to get the best time they can. The transport service will serve Sportive riders too, meaning there is an easy and hassle free way to get you and your bike to the start in Glasgow, or back home from Edinburgh at the finish.
map of the route can be viewed here on the RHS of the page -
Bikely version of the route. Looks relatively easy after the first 39 miles
fixed?
When I said relatively easy, I meant geared. I don't really fancy those climbs riding a 80" gear. More so the descents. But to put it into perspective, Glasgow->Kirkintilloch->Killsyth->Tak->Carron Valley->Crow Road->Strathblane->Milgaive->Glasgow is only 1000ft less climbing over 50 miles than this route.
So after the first 30 miles the climbs are only very short.
booo
I may change my mind. But I was hoping to do this one geared and in a decent time
euan:I may change my mind. But I was hoping to do this one geared and in a decent time
I'll probably join you on whatever you decide unless there's a large fixed gear crew reppin
There is a temptation to rip it up the climbs fixed against roadies. Could buy a bigger cog and after 40 miles swap over to a smaller one.
euan:There is a temptation to rip it up the climbs fixed against roadies. Could buy a bigger cog and after 40 miles swap over to a smaller one.
I was thinking a flip flop or cog change would be the way to go. Represent the gfgss long distance squad properly.
here's the same route on ridewithgps, just cos i like the layout better
i'd be happy to do that fixed - we did ayr-edinburgh a couple weeks ago along the a70 and while the beginning of this one has a little bit more of a hill (and is 20 miles more) there was nothing huge or unpleasant on our route - we did have a nice tail wind though which helped. where you join the a70 was great bar some fast traffic, 30 miles odd of gentle flat bits, and then there's a couple more hills and 20 miles downhill for the end
I'm doing it geared. Would get bored on fixed.
NMK:I'm doing it geared. Would get sored on fixed.
fixed.
I'd like to try it fixed.
if it aint broke don't fix it?
Not to say it's easy, because it isn't, but 100 miles geared doesn't seem like a big challenge, which I guess is what I'd be after; trying to do something that I'm not quite sure I'll even finish. If geared, how about riding back as well?
I'll definitely be on a geared bike for this. I'll be dumping a car in Edinburgh the day before so that I don't have to worry about transport. There are spots available for a few people in the car.
ahhh, the time to do it in is the challenge. I'm aiming for 5h30 at the moment but secretly hoping I can get it down to 5hr15
Yes, I suppose so, I hadn't really considered that.
euan:ahhh, the time to do it in is the challenge. I'm aiming for 5h30 at the moment but secretly hoping I can get it down to 5hr15
would be pretty decent imo! is that taking into account drafting as a group or could you do that alone? (i certainly couldn't)
Its taking into account drafting and a hell of a lot of training between now and September. I think 5h30 is realistic, 5h15 not so. Over similar routes solo I'm averaging 18mph at the moment, though I need to start working on the distance a bit more.
yeah it's the distance that would do me! it's a long way to carry enough stuff if nothing else, and even 15 mins of food/water stops would up your average speed noticeably i'm sure
up for giving it a go though if you want someone to should encouraging slogans at you, at least for the some of it anyway ;)
I'm hiring some domestiques for the day.
I'm cheap.
rusty is charging 5 quid a day, he was quite insistant actually
I can do electrics and everything!
euan:ahhh, the time to do it in is the challenge. I'm aiming for 5h30 at the moment but secretly hoping I can get it down to 5hr15
we did 5.30 for the trosssachs ton at quite a leisurely pace last weekend. group of 4-5 with a couple of hours drafting in bigger groups. 5.15 shouldn't be a problem if you can eat enough on the way round to prevent bonking. a slightly diffent group (6) did the caledonia etape (82 miles) in 3.45, averaging over 21.5 so it ids doable if you get with the right bunch.
Yeah I'm planning to hit it early so I can get back to Glasgow and recover, will try and do it with only one water stop as well
