Is anyone racing this season?
I've had a look at the SCU Calendar and have made my own calendar out of it with about 23 races that I could enter. I'm thinking of starting with the Moscow APR which I've heard is a great race.
Go for it!
If I didn't work on a ship there's a few that I'd certainly be interested in.
The Willie Rafferty 10 TT run by St Christopher's CC in June is a good one. Uses the A77 course. Great scran at the finish as well ;-)
I have entered Gifford Super 6 B race but will likely be over subscribed so if I don't get in it'll be the Moscow APR as it's the same day.
There are also some TLI races - Dales RT are organising via the TLI this season.

There is also an APR in Lochwinnoch area and Dales are doing a road race, a beginner's road race and a series of 8 evening TTs
I'm racing this year.
TT's in West & Central Scotland (hopefully also the National 10 & 25, maybe the TTT champs too).
Probably will venture down south for some other events, also intend to do the Planet X Old Skool National 10 in August near Cambridge.
I might do an APR or some crits if I can get fit enough too.
I joined Dales Cycles RT in the end. As mentioned the club are putting on some decent events in 2010, if you want any further info, let me know & I'll put you onto the relevant organiser.
Also, do people on here still want me to ask if Andy (the organiser of the midweek 10s) will include a fixed gear category in his events so that GFGSS can have an unofficial championship?
I've also started doing my Commissaire qualifications & have already volunteered to assist at the Glasgow Nightingale APR on 21 of March (Lake of Menteith), probably will do some of the Dales or Glenmarnock crits too as my other training events.
the tour de trossachs will be part of the rudy series this year. Is that the same as the planet x old skool series?
Shrimper - are the Dales tts going to be down at the Eglinton course at Kilwinning? I've heard it's predominantly going to be Ayrshire based.
I was swithering about the Lake APR but it's full of strong racers and I certainly ain't one of those!
Hopefully do the national 10 as well
To be honest, I know nothing about road racing and probably wouldn't even consider doing it for another year.
It's fu*kin hard! But perhaps that's cos I is crap!
Well nothing about the licenses required and what races are what.
If you want to ride TLI races then just turn up - it's an extra £2 for tt's for non-TLI members or £3 for road races.
TLI entry fees are generally lower as well - typically £7 for members and £9 or £10 for non-members. Only downside is there ain't as many TLI races up here to chose from although Dales RT are doing more than their fair share this coming season. (TLI membership is £15 per year)
Races run under the auspices of SCU/British Cycling have, normally, a £10 entry fee (£15 for super 6 races and one or two others) but non-BC members need a day membership and day race licence which is £5 each, or £10, on top of your entry fee. Alternatively, if you are a member of CTC then I think this gives you the adequate third party insurance to race, in which case you don't need a day membership licence although I could be wrong on this. You would still need a £5 day race licence though.
British Cycling itself has four categories of membership
Bronze
Silver
Gold
Everyday Cycling
Everyday is a bit like CTC i think but if you want to race you will need a day licence as well
Bronze is £12 a year - if you haven't had it before you get it free in your first year but you'll still need a £5 day race licence to race both road race and TT events
Silver is £32 - day licence for road races required but not for TTs (don't ask me why??)
Gold is £60-odds. (as silver)
If you are racing with a provisional licence ie a day licence then if you win a race you don't get any points.
A full race licence (£36 extra) means you don't need a day licence for road racing and if you get points you get them applied ot your licence and then move up the categories. Start at 4th cat. move up 3rd, 2nd, 1st, Elite. 10 points in a season gets you out of the 4th cats into 3rd. Once in 3rd you can't move back down but you need 40 in a season to get into second then 100 to get into 1st.
Trouble is, not many races up here have points allocated to them so the few that do, it's hard to score as they get good fields. There are a lot of 4th cat riders in Scotland who will go well under an hour for a 25 mile TT. That gives you an idea of how hard it is to move up the categories.
Of course, if you've got talent you'll find your own level but apparently there are quite a few sharks lurking in the lower cats :-(
Guys who were maybe 1st or 2nd cats and dropped out for a year or two will re-join and BC sometimes give them 4th cat licences by mistake instead of realising they should be 3rd cats therefore making 4th cat racing even harder. There ain't that many 4th cat only races either and of those that do exist - quite often they don't have any points attached to them so even if you win you won't move up. Points are allocated depending on how hard a race is rated ie distance, quality of field, etc.
TLI races are handicapped by age rather than categories and they don't have a points and licence system.
Clear as mud!?!
Yeah still a bit confused. So if you want to earn points you need a full race licence which is about £96?
Yes, if you take it with a Gold membership.
I've got a Silver and a full race which was around £68
If it's your first year and you haven't been a member of British Cycling before you'll get the value of the Bronze membership deducted from the cost so it would be £56 or thereabouts.
I bought a race licence in a moment of misplaced optimism around crimbo - doubt it'll ever get a whiff of any points....
ALternatively you could enter all 9 of Dales' events with the TLI for not much more money than your BC membership and race licence - see if racing appeals to you.
8 tt's and one road race as far as i'm aware.
Hmm. My interest in racing is dampened by the cost and lack of a car to get me places.

You get a discount for being a member of a club. I'm not sure how much it is though.
With TLI you save 2 quid for tt's and 3 quid for road races so if you do, say 5 tt's and 5 rr's then you save 25 quid and your tli membership is only 15 for the year
If you join a club you can do club confined events for free or perhaps a £1 donation to club funds but these will be time trials not road races
