Bottom Bracket Cups (Plastic Vs. Metal)
  • Rory February 8

the bike im riding the now has a fucked bb, got it taken oot and will get it replace when i get a new bike so i can sell the bike as a complete item. these come with plastic cups can u get any with metal?? spoke to that oddity in common wheel about getting it replaced he showed me one for think 15 quid but its with plastic cups. wanting to sell the bike with some nice shiney cups to go with the headset, cranks and silver track drop bars.

(the plastic cups make it seem really cheap looking, prefer metal) neil common wheel said you cant but is this true? i think u must be able to fit metal cups. cheers rory.

It depends on the BB really. Some come with metal cups and some don't. The Shimano BB that everyone seems to use has plastic cups. I'm assuming this is what you've got. Depending on the spindle length and taper there may be other BBs out there that you can use. They'll likely cost about the same as the one with plastic cups.

I use a Miche Primato BB which is very nice and shiny but it'll likely not work for you if you're using a Shimano BB already.

Stroglight JP400 AL. Only cheap square taper BB you will get with metal cups. I've got the steal version and will probably get the alu version when my current one dies. Seems to be spinning fine though after about 8 months of abuse.

Though the reason plastic cups exist are so it is easier to get the cups out and less chance of them creaking.

Some older shimano BBs had both sides metal. Currently they tend to just have a metal driveside cup with a nylon non drive side cup. There are plenty of metal cupped BBs available but they tend to be more expensive and for a range of reasons a nylon cup is more sensible.

I'd tend to go with nylon you don't want it to cease up totally / wreck the bb shell threads / add weight / creak when it wears / etc etc etc

cool, cheers for the info, good point about the creaking, didnt really realise that. oh well am prob goni got for the common wheels options, as its goni be more sensilbe and also cheeeper than most of the bike shops iv been asking about bb`s.

also what kind of grease is good to use for your bike on the threads of the bb shell and also for my headset bearings?
    any sugestions..

  • euaneuan February 9

I just use a teflon grease.

I use Velox grease. It's made from grapes in France.
