It means really simple syndication. It's a way of subscribing to things like blogs.

You can get apps for the iPhone or it works on Safari or Mail on a mac. On a PC it might work in internet explorer and probably works in Firefox through some extension.

If you already have a google mail account your best bet might be to use Google Reader (an RSS aggregator which can subscribe to and present RSS feed results) or alternatively you can use iGoogle (the Google custom portal page thingie) to subscribe to feeds. No downloads required.

google reader is a good way off keeping track of your subscriptions. You can then use something like feeddemon to view them on your pc and netnewswire to view them on your iphone.. all sync'd through your google reader account. Means you dont read anything twice :)

The mobile version of reader is pretty great if you have access to the internet whilst your on your iphone. It's actually in some ways better than the full blown version as that doesn't give you a way to chew through unread items in manageable batches. No offline support yet, obviously but as it's built on HTML 5 it's only a matter of time.
