Just a wee thought. The leather foot straps on my charmingly idiosyncratic bike have given up the ghost but i'm a vegetarian so i don't really want to get new leather ones. Any thoughts on something that might look nicer than some crappy plastic ones? If not i think i'll just cannabalise an old belt and make my own.

yeah i was trying to keep the whole thing together but the maillard pedals are a pain in the arse. might just whip on some different ones and start a-fresh
also i don't know why i didn't just think of syntheitic leather to begin with. fail.

I got some generic Raleigh straps from Gear for £6.99 and have been fine so far - they don't look particularly bad...(EDIT they are nylon or something but black/anonymous looking)

I had the same problem for a bit, leather ones aren't great in my opinion anyways. This Glasgow weather, the leather is almost always soaked and I would find the straps constantly stretching. So I bought some long hose clamps from a hardware shop and had METAL straps, once they're dialed in right you can't beat it.

    True Story.

This is true. I've seen them. Wrapped in inner tubes I remember. Laminated straps fix the stretching problem. They have to be good though or they'll delaminate.
