Here's a little walkthrough of how to modify SPD-SL pedals to take a strap. This is quite a common modification by track racers. It's obviously no use on the street. This is a velodrome only mod.

all the sprinters use SPD-R any way that when you tighten them all the way up you can barely get your foot in them, and never mind out of them.
