It's hard to judge without the full context, but assuming he was genuinely trying to steal their bikes, he came off pretty lightly; quite a restrained attack.

i got sent an email a wee while a go. it was a japanese speed cooking contest. basically the chefs scored a live fish along the body a few times, flash fried it in hot as fuck oil then popped it on a plate covered it in a tomato sauce and served it up. it was cooked that quick it was still breating on the plate and there was a few close ups of the breathing fish. disqualification loomed if they killed it.
