does anyone bother?
what do you mean?
i think that answers it!
does anyone bother riding at critical mass?
i popped along to the last glasgow one and only about six other people had turned up. three of them were dressed as bananas and one as a carrot! it was raining all day though.
"last friday of every month"
does it happen in Glasgow every month?
as far as i know but four fruit/veg is hardly a critical mass! the meeting point is george square about 1730. i might go along to the next one to see if there are more people. i don't think glasgow gets a very big turnout.
the glasgow critical mass website hasn't been updated for a while either and the last entry was in february or thereabouts asking for some help and contributions.
hopefully this site will help in contribution to the critical mass.
im planning getting up early on sat and taking a cycle from Perth to Glasgow so its looking promising i will be in Glasgow hotdog.
cool - just drop me a text - i'll probably be around.
I've seen groups of 20-odd folk during the summer months. There are photos on Flickr.
I reckon assorted fruit and veg is the way forward. Car drivers won't get pissed off by bananas on bikes. They're a lot easier to overtake than an ensemble of freaks with polis outriders at the front.
I think we should get ourselves down the Critical Mass each month. I can't make it this month but from August onwards I'll be there every month.
i'll probably at least get myself to george square to see who/what else turns up - it might also be nice to have normal cyclists involved rather than just a load of hippies/freaks/geeks on borrowed/stolen/childrens bikes.
i'm not dressing as a banana though!
yeah we should get fixed/single-speed riders represented.
i aggree.
or
+1 as is, i believe, the correct forum etiquette.
critical mass on friday anyone?
a little fixed gear showing amongst the freaks, geeks and hippies?
I can't because I won't be here. As of August I'll be there though.
i would LOVE to come but i need to save every penny right now.
Hmm. I might appear hidden on a non fixed and see what the fuss is about.
euan:Hmm. I might appear hidden on a non fixed and see what the fuss is about.
there's no fuss. i think glasgow must be the least attended CM in the world! i'll be in town anyway, so should be popping along to george sq. just to see whats happening.

As of August we should commit to making it a little less "less well attended"
certainly. i'll miss half of them but the ones where i'm in glasgow i shall attend. even if it's raining!
Aye hopefully I'll have the Mercian all already to go by the August one. Just another £100 worth of bits to buy I guess. A bike build ain't cheap.
cheaper than a car ;)
Cuppa T:cheaper than a car ;)
BETTER than a car too!
No many people running about in a 70s car. Same can be said about bikes I guess.
I love though I can legal ride about without the majority of the required reflectors because the bike was made before 1980-something
Does CM still start at 5:30? The website's pretty out of date... Hadn't heard about the heavy-handed police presence at the April (?) ride!
Does anyone know if that's why (by all accounts) it's poorly attended now?
Who knows man. I still know the Fruity loops on bikes still make an appearance. The Critical Mass went by the 13th Note when I was having a drink there last month. Maybe about 15 people.
it's still half five at george square.
hopefully if more "normal" cyclists attend, it might be better. i think there was twelve people there last month.
i don't know why it's so poorly attended though. weather? heavy handed police? can't be arsed-itis?
i'll still be popping along anyway.
I guess it just needs a influx of people that bring along their friends and spread the word. George Square is on my way home from work so I'll have a peep.
Yeah, I'll try to get down this Friday too...
Hey everyone first post on here. Just buit myself a Flyer frame/fork up and it needs some use so il try n make it to cm on Friday. Dunno if theres many Flyers about, not seen many but im the one with yellow tyres and risers riding freewheel.

post up some photos if you can of your bicycle
I was just reading about the April 2007 arrests. Scary stuff. Careless cycling just about sums me up most of the time.
only got crappy phone pics the now, il try get sum taken tomoz n post em up, maybe put one of my ugly mug up too on the bikes/faces thread
Dear GFGSS
MERRY CRITICAL MASS
I'll be down there after a trip to B&Q to get a imperial allen key set and some copper pipe suitable for fitting a crown race.
i'm sorry to say, i will not make it to critical mass. i got knocked off my bike by a horse last week and twisted my knee. i've now got a trapped nerve behind my knee that makes it agony to pedal. arse.
by a horse? how did that happen?
were you trackstanding on top of a horse?
no. part of my ride home is on single track country lanes. a very young girl was leading the horse from one field, across the road to another but didn't bother to check for traffic.
the horse saw me, got a fright, reared up and bolted. straight into me. it then ran off up the road.
i thought i'd recovered - didn't do any cycling until wednesday then did 25 miles. did 50 miles yesterday and now the pain is back. bugger!
bloody ponies! *shakes fist*
hope your knee gets better soon!
Count me in for August
August will be the big one for GlasgowFGSS at Critical Mass I think. I'll definitely be there.
Went tonight, there was about 10 people there.
To be honest its not really my cuppa tea. Really unorganised, too small a group to make any impact. I guess it must work better in cities where theres a larger turnout but all that happened tonight was a load of cars got held up/drivers got pissed off for reasons unbeknownst to them and we cycled about the city making last minute direction changes until i stopped on gt western road to talk to a mate then couldnt find them again.
I get enough aggro from drivers etc when i cycle that i dont really see the point in going out with the specific intention of creating more aggro.
It was good to be in a group of relatively like minded people tho but i reckon a regular meet of fgss types seperate from critical mass would be better.
Ah. I was going to ask if you were on the forum mate. I saw you go past us and tried to shout after you but you were too far away.
I agree. It could be good but so many of those people were inexperienced riders, careless or just not communicative. It could be done a lot better, just don't give up on it yet. I had some good chats and there were some people there with very different views on how to cycle around Glasgow.
Including myself there was 11 people I think.

Whereabouts were you? sorry i dint notice. If theres gonna be a big fgss turnout at the august one il give it another chance. Was kinda worried about getting into it with drivers etc tonight coz its like the um....4th time iv been out on the new bike so still very overprotective of it. lol.

+1 I would like to meet up as well but Id rather go for a circuit of some kind then perhaps a pint or two. Nothing regimented just a run and a pint:) Before the weather turns!
what was the main turn out type of people?
jakies on stolen bikes?
fixed riders?
mums and dads with their kids?
Ehhhh. Mixed bag.
Some guy whos been to a good few Critical Masses over the world and into touring
Woman who had been to the Edinburgh one and commuted on her bike
Three art students, nice people but I wasn't happy cycling near them
Some young guy on a MTB
Some young girl
Me
Some guy in Shades on an old 3 speed Raliegh
Mechanical Vandal on his white singlespeed.
Some guy turned up at the start but had to dash off to meet his sister.

The guy on the blue Giant with the mad blonde unkept mullet. That chopped Brooks of yours was well nice.
im annoyed at myself i couldn't make it however i do look forward to the London ones, big crews and when i do make it back up north i will make it around the last friday of a month.
euan:The guy on the blue Giant with the mad blonde unkept mullet. That chopped Brooks of yours was well nice.
Ah right, thanks. Im useless with names.
The polish chick seemed to have the right idea with the flag, identify ourselves so that road users/peds etc dont just think we r a bunch of wierdos hogging the road. What pub did you goto, i took a look in Oran Mor and couldnt see anyone then rode up Gt Western a bit then halfway down Byres Rd then back to Gt Western and went all the way to Anniesland Cross then back and down Byres Road then off home.
We all got off at Coopers, locked our bikes up outside the B&Bs and went into Hubbards.
