Hi,
Take a look at http://www.justgiving.com/bryanetapecaledonia Why not put your hand in your pocket and help me reach my target for MND Scotland. Tell any fixed/single speed friends. Just Giving is really easy! The Caledonia Etape is really tough!
Thanks for your support
Bryan
Entry has closed but there are sponsor places left. You need to guarantee £500 for MacMilllan Cancer. Its a lot but I recon I could get it together. Anyone else up for it? Only 6 weeks left to train but I recon it won't be too hard.
Let me know and I'll forward the email with all the details.
Hello everyone. Hope Glasgow's well. Looks like the weather's gone a bit insane up there.
I was wondering if any of my old muckers are doing this next year? I'm about to sign up for it.

Since moving down south I've joined a club and am trying to get some decent winter miles in in preparation for the spring/summer. I think some people from London are driving up - would be nice to see any of you that are considering it. I'm even halfway to a decent road bike... Oh, and happy Christmas :-)
hey! Merry Xmas an all that! Im not one for road races, unless its a road that leads to pub!
Anyway, hope Londons treating you (2) well.
Remember to bring a spare tube or 2, didnt some nugget spread carpet tacks all over the course last year?
Matt
[quote][cite] Smout:[/cite]Hey P'Belle... Hope you are all good? I might be game for this. Geared i take it... Merry Christmas to you too...
you know the course will not be in finnieston and not end in the gazelle!!
Yeah, I'm well thanks, guys.
I'll be geared, smout, though presumably you could do it fixed. 81 miles I'm assuming there will be some sort of post-ride drink, but I dunno how it will work.
It is the infamous carpet-tack one, yeah. Little pricks :-)
Hi,
The Etape is a great event. I took part last year and fell foul to a carpet tacker at the top of the Schehallion road (you all heard about the psycho who objected to the closed roads and put down 15 miles of carpet tacks along the route). Riders were all crouching next to their upturned bikes and most of us were wondering what the fuck was going on for a while. I soon found out about 50 miles in to the route. About a thousand of us were all held at the top of the Shehallion road for an hour as the organisers tried to clear the road. I spoke to a rider from Dundee at the sunny finish line who told me his friend got four punctures and other riders helped him out with spare tubes.
Anyway it all just added to the experience of cycling camaraderie. At the end of the race, I was so pumped with endorphins, I couldn't wind down until late in the evening, it felt like I was on cocaine. I probably shouldn't have taken so many energy bars, cups of coffee and coca cola.
I don't think the arsehole who tried to sabotage the race realised it just gave it more publicity and he didn't realise just how resilient we all are. I would rabbit on all day about the etape but I'll just say that they expect over 2,500 riders this year, so you better book your place soon.
[quote][cite] IFP:[/cite]Would love to give it a pop but I don't think I'll be fit enough for it this year. Sounds really really good though.
It's only 81 miles and going by the level of some of the 'riders' that come in my shop that say they are doing it i don't think ul have much to worry about.
If it was more local id do it on my trick bike just for a laugh but i canny be arsed with the trek, the entry price and the necessary overnight stay.

Done! You in?
I'm really looking forward to it.

You gonna be back in town like?
Yeah, i guess so. We'll have to get in a pub-based ride or two too.
[quote][cite] tctrio:[/cite]I'm not sure they allow you to do it on a fixed, single or recumbant. Better check that out on their website.
Just dont register then.

Is this at me? I'll be doing it geared.
Gosh darnit, I think I'm going to do it. Probably single speed, have had a look at the regulations and there's no mention of single speeds being disallowed, only funny handlebars for some reason. Mind you, registering the day before is a bit damn annoying. Could make a weekend of it though.
Ah, cheers. IFP, do it - limited places left. At least you're in Scotland! I'm going up with some guys from my club in some sort of modified rainbow bus and staying in a hotel in Perth (all the B&Bs are booked out).
I don't know if I came across as a 'well you lot on fixeds can't take part'. I didn't mean it in that manner. I just meant check it out before commiting your entrance fee. However go for it if we are allowed to take part on fg/ss
It was a geared (53/38 x 11/23) ride for me last year. It was a pretty easy, the wind was virtually non-existent but if the breeze gets up around Loch Rannoch and Schiehallion this year, it could be a totally different experience.
I certainly wouldn't be able to take part on my fg (the long steep downhills could be a complete bastard as well), but maybe I'm just a complete pussy.
I haven't been out riding (except commuting) as much as last year. I've put on a few pounds, been smoking too many fags and lost the will to get out training. But I still plan to take part. I'll be putting my entrance fee on at the end of the month if there are places left. If it's full then maybe it's karma.
Nice one; well, see some of you there then. I'll be in rollapaluza kit on a bright green road bike. Gi'e us a wave.

How can someone guilty of what he did just be "let off".
If he'd done the same at any other event he'd have been charged and prosecuted.
What kind of message does that send out to the general (and often numpty) public?

How do you know he is guilty if he hasn't been tried? He denied it. There wasn't much evidence that it was him from what I've read.
Would you like the crown to start perusing unwinnable cases against people wasting time and money?

He admitted it after being caught out on his alibi. And yes, I would like the crown to pursue it.....
But hey, as long as your happy that the cycling public are being protected and that no other agenda was being served. Like him being a church elder, a former solicitor, etc whats the problem?
[quote][cite] NMK:[/cite]You staying up there?
Yep, in a best western in Perth. Sharing with the other girl who's coming up. There's a fuckin' sauna! It's going to be great after 81 miles.
And then send for the waiter to get more.
This is exactly how I'm envisaging my post-ride evening panning out.
[quote][cite] NMK:[/cite]
is the heat/cold combo not supposed to be a good way of avoided post race cramps? Obviously while rehydrating.
I think rehydration and salt replacement is far more important than the heat/cold combo though and you can't really do both at the same time. I am a fan of a nice hot bath when I return from a long ride in pish weather. The pain/ecstasy of the blood returning to my hands and feet and some SIS REGO (I have a big tub I bought a while ago) gives a great sense of "I did something today".
[quote][cite] NMK:[/cite]That is what I had to do. Is there a website for people to make chairty pledges for your cause?
I'm probably staying at a friend's parents place in Grantully, which is about 10 miles from Pitlochry. I'll swap someone a bed a for a lift!
I'll sponsor you a fiver to help you on your way.
yup I'll sponsor you and all. I think there is a charity website I'll ask a friend who might know
