Just Bought a Lemond Filmore
  • Hi guys
Bought a Fillmore from Alpine @ George's X y/day for £350 and I am really happy with it. First ride into town from the West End vindicated my decision to ride my Ridgeback hard-tail at a similar ratio for long enough for me to get used to it. It was fluid, comfortable, silent and far less intimidating/difficult than I'd counted on. SO I joined this forum about an hour ago and....can't find much mention of the model. I didn't just make a mistake buying this did I?

  • krakowkrakow April 2009

I know there's a few Lemond Fillmore's that have been spotted knocking about, but I can't remember off the top of my head if anyone on here rides one; I'm sure they'll be along shortly if they do.

If you're happy with it, then don't worry about the buyer's remorse, I'm sure it'll be grand. ;-)

Looks like Uwe's Grandad had one, but might have sold it.

Looks like a good bike to me. There are plenty of OTP bikes to cheese from in that price bracket and, apart from personal preference of course, there isn't a lot to differentiate between them.

    Ride it and enjoy it!

  • Johnny+CrashJohnny Crash April 2009

    Oh, and welcome!

  • krakowkrakow April 2009

Aye, that too. Welcome to the forums.

  • rustyrusty April 2009

One of the couriers on Sunday had a Filmore. Not a bad choice at all. Welcome to the forum.

  • Me and Velonoir both work in alpine. theres a few staff menbers that have fillmores. the only things i would say is that like all of the peg singlespeed/fixed bikes, the wheelset leaves a little to be desired and the finishing kit could allways be a little lighter, other than that, there good little go-ers!

  • Thanks guys! I know bikes have such a wallet-draining potential its scary at times. It would've seemed ridiculous not too long ago for £400 to've been considered getting you something "approaching decent" or whatever. Every single person I've spoken to about getting a single-speed in the past year has told me I'm mad to even think about it, but the desire for one kept hanging around and I thought, "the hell with it". Glad I did

  • krakowkrakow April 2009

You've obviously been speaking to the wrong people!

  • yes sounds like youve been mixing with the wrong crowd my son

  • Johnny+CrashJohnny Crash April 2009

Those people are not your friends.

Don't worry, we'll see you right.

  • This is some kind of cult, isn't it? Do I have to learn the "knowing nod" as I pass another s/speeder?

    It's more of a Madison style sling hand-shake ;)

Assimilate and do not question. All your base are belong to us now.

Just to add to what BSB said, the filmore is an excellent bike, especially at the £350 price. While the wheels are nothing too fancy they are durable and servicable (and a damn sight better than some other OTP wheelsets I've seen). I don't own one but have had a wee scoot round on them and sold a few with nothing but positive feedback. I should also say that it is one of the few OTP bikes that looks like right. Horizontal top tubes FTW.

  • euaneuan April 2009

    So true.

    I love my Langster!

(I'm perfectly aware it's as ugly as all of the sin, but - apart from the wheels, which still aren't as bad as people say - it's a great bike to ride.)

  • Cool. Did notice a little creaking fom the wheels on a cold night coming downhill at speed. Is this the spokes settle-in under loading?

  • Yeh sounds like it. the spokes sometimes become a little twisted when your truing them under tension, so when they are loaded and unloaded (i.e. durin riding) they untwist themselves. I would just check that they are still true after this un-twisting has happened.

This is something I want to do/have done. Get my wheels all trued up and tensioned.

  • there's certainly no obvious rim-wobble. Might not have noticed it in traffic or with a derailleur

I need to get my rear retensioned. Its not quite true or as round anymore.

    Sounds serious !

  • euaneuan April 2009

Nah, you are talking about very slight wobble. Totally ridable.

i think he was making a joke at the expense of rusty's not true or round rear!!

  • rustyrusty April 2009

    It wasn't my non-true non-round rear. It was euan's.

    LOL!

  • So, what's the main difference in geometry between a track and a road/racing bike? I don't know how to tell, apart from top-frame angle, which is pretty vague and/or wrong

  • rustyrusty April 2009

The bottom bracket is higher and the seat-tube angle is steeper.

  • rustyrusty April 2009

You can usually tell buy what the clearance of for the wheels is too. If the clearance is tight, it's likely a track frame.

  • Ok. Just on Rivendell's site www.rivbike.com and intrigued by the differences. Is the bb height to just get you into the tuck more easily without having a stupidly long seatpost? (I'm 5' 6" and have short legs, so I'm not your typical Fixie-rider)

  • euaneuan April 2009

Higher bb is for more clearance on the banking of tracks.

  • rustyrusty April 2009

    [quote][cite] Scottish Steve:[/cite]I'm not your typical Fixie-rider
You're not an art school student?

  • :-) Inexplicably carrying in equal proportions, the aura of being both self-contained and needing validation from his peer-group!

  • rabsdarabsda April 2009

not as much rake on the forks, no mudguard clearance, no bottle holes, hangers, eyelets etc.

  • I can see the ethos/logic now. BTW, I've got a weird spacing issue on this PC, so the first 3 words of every line are missing, so I might take things slightly out of context at times....

  • euaneuan April 2009

You can have all of those on the Bob Jackson and that is a track frame :)

But it's not what one would describe as a 'Balls-out Track Frame™'

upgrade your IE or use mozilla. sorted.

And more the shame. Against everything I've ever said about the UCI, I do wish they would apply the same rules to track racing as they do the Hour Record.

I think that would be brilliant. I'd like to see the UCI take a leaf out of the NJSs book. Just imagine all of the classic cinelli components which would be produced as a result.

Super record would be where I'd call the cut. Anything produced according to patents filed after 1985 is banned:

  • euaneuan April 2009

Nah. You could do it by specifying weight, geometry, tube diameter and material. Minimum amount of spokes and a maximum rim depth.

  • rustyrusty April 2009

Yeah, but my way is cooler and helps the economy by re-using machines for making old components to stricter manufacturing tolerances.

  • I'm online at work and not really supposed to be....can't change the settings! Can follow most of what's said and I should be able to get to a Sat meet in a few weeks, to put names to faces (or vice cersa!)
