I'm being made redundant at work, but I'm getting paid off so not bad.
I'm looking to spend about a grand max on a road bike (then i'll need to get shoes and pedals as well).
If i was going to buy new, I'd probably go for something like the Focus Culebro 2009 currently discounted to £861.75 on wiggle.
I'm also considering a couple of second hand options. I am looking at a Look 481SL which is going second hand as a complete bike, not 100% sure what to offer the guy though.
Any ideas?

The Focus Culebro looks like a good bike, certainly at that price. both rusty and I ride Focus Variado's. Join the Club!

You'll not get much better than the Culebro for a new bike. It's quite low in weight too which is more of a consideration when it comes to road bikes. Is the Look steel or carbon? I've seen some that are carbon (still with thin tubes) but the one you posted the photo of looks steel. If it's carbon I'd be worried that it's not that stiff due to the narrow tubes. If steel then it might be quite heavy. If I was in your position I'd go for the Focus but I'd have a look around eBay for any local bikes which are only a year or so old (Focus Cayos come up a lot). Because you your size you'll probably not get many bikes that fit coming up very often.
One thing to note is that you can get a 7-day test drive from Focus so you may as well buy the Culebro, see how you like it, then send it back if you don't.

The look is carbon tubing with aluminium lugs and aluminium bottom bracket shell, was the tour de france bike for credit agricole in 2004, it's a dura-ace/ultegra mix (DA bits are cranks, BB & hubs)
I think I could get it for about the same money as the Focus

Sounds like something a little bit special. Maybe you should check out the look in person, if you haven't already. Take it for a short ride to see how you like it.

Make sure you do. It'd be daft to hand over that sort of money without a test drive. Bear in mind that you can always try a bike in a shop and buy it elsewhere to get a better price.
Dooley's in Paisley used to have a good selection of road bikes. There's not much on their website, but definitely worth a phone call if not a visit. They gave me a discount on the last Specialized bike I bought - £100 cheaper than Dales, plus they collected the bike and brought it back after its free service.

Oh, the guy I cycle back from Aberfoyle with on Saturday had the most awesome shiny bike I've seen in the flesh. It was a Specialized S-Works Tarmac SL2 with Campagnolo Record 11 and Mavic Ksyrium SLs (his training wheels). He uses Mavic Cosmic Carbones for racing. Madness.

No it was Record 11 as in if there's something wrong with it you take it to Willy Bain to get it fixed. It would irritate me a bit though because it's quite easy to give the chain a thorough clean when you take it off the bike. It makes cleaning the chainrings and cassette much easier too.

Also, Record as in you need to pay £200 to replace your cassette (although it's now got a few coatings on it so it doesn't need replaced as often, or ever).

Eh I'm a bit biased cos I got a Wilier Triestina frame but when I was checking them out they look damn impressive and certainly something different. Only thing I don't like about them is that the paint jobs make them look like a marketing man's been sick all over them but nice stuff...

That's the style with road bikes it seems. I actually quite like it. If I had those wheels I'd not want to take the logos off. It's the same with a nice set of Zipps.

Yeah used them in a couple of tt's. I have a few APR'S coming up as well, pot holes are brutal though. They are really quick one you get them spooled up.

Yeah its Marmite for sure. I may take the decals of the wheels, not sure.
Ideally I would have an all black Colnago C50 with minimal logs as well to balance the ying and yang:)

oh and by the way I'm buying the look.
It's a 481SL in jalabert colours. Has ultegra / dura ace components. Wheels are dura ace to open pros. 2nd hand but in amazing condition. Going to buy it in june when i get the cash sorted

right so I called the guy about the look which I was supposed to be buying... and he's not really up for selling it anymore. Which is a pain as I need to buy a bike sharpish now.

105 groupset minimum, ultegra would be sweet though

I'd still go for a Focus - have a look at Wiggle and see what discounts they have at the moment.
If you can stretch to £1439 you could get the Focus Cayo Ultegra.....

Cycle to work schemes have a limit of £1000 I believe. And in this case, don't count.

If you are going to do the all carbon route then surely hit up the Planet X Ultegra for £200 less. If you are spending close to £1500 no a bike you might as well go the extra £99 and get the Planet X Dura Ace 2009 groupo bikes.
