i've just started putting together my next bike. i thought i might as well share what i'm doing in here.

so far, i'm just planning and collecting parts - some i have, some i've bought and some i've been given. so. the plan is to use a fetish attack frame as the base and build it up from there.

to start with, here is a list of parts i plan to use. hopefully it won't look shit! i've borrowed some photos and taken others.

    Frame : fetish attack

Forks : specialized langster forks off my old(er) langster.

Wheels: Halo aeroage track (black) (i know the picture is of the road wheels)

    Headset: cane creek IS2.

    Stem: still undecided.

Bars: Airwing Profile (without the brake levers)

Bar tape: Pro Cork tape. (yes, with flowers. don't ask!)

    Brake Lever: Dirty Harry

    Brake: Campagnolo mirage.

Brake cable: Odyssey slic (bmx cable, i think)

Crank and Chainring: FSA Carbon Track.

    Bottom bracket: FSA Platinum (isis)

    Pedals: Look Keo Sprint.

    Chain: KMC

    Sprocket: EAI 18t.

    Lock Ring: Shimano dura ace.

Seat Post: FSA SL-K carbon but considering an aero post.

Saddle: Selle Italia SLR gel flow.

    Seat Clamp: Hope

    Tyres?

    Tubes?

that's it for the moment. hopefully a winter of collecting/building and this should be ready by the start of march.

if you think it'll be pish, just tell me. i can take it! or if you've got any ideas to make it better, i'd like to hear them.

    cheers,

    johnny

    Tyres: Vittoria Rubino Pro

    Tubes: Vittoria Ultralite Butyl Tubes

Looks great. Some nice components going on there.

  2.

    cheers,

i'm watching some vittoria rubino pros on flea-bay at the moment and wiggle are sending me some ultralight tubes as we speak!

i don't know whether to go for red, white or just plain black tyres though. i might leave them to the end and see what it looks like.

the only thing is that the stickers are under the laquer on the frame. i'd rather remove most of them.

I'd say go for black tyres. The red ones look alright. The white ones Goose has and I don't like 'em that much. Stickers under the lacquer are pretty much stuck there. Unless you do a re-spray they're not going nowhere.

  3.

aye, i'm not shelling out for a resparay - black leccy tape FTW!

i'm trying to do it as well as i can for as little money as possible. i got a good deal on the frame and the cranks (there's no way i would be using those cranks if i had to pay full price!)

Oh yeah. Totally forgot that it's black. I put black tape on my Fuji. Covered up the decals a treat.

Awesome photo. I hear there are some nice areas to cycle about in around tower bridge.

  6.

Those Fetish frames are ali right? Iv always thought the ones you see on fgg are a bit ott but part from the graphix that one looks pretty cool. Lots of carbon niceness so should be pretty light/fast. Have you already bought the seatpost?

I’d go for the H PLUS SON rims or Velocity Deep Vs if I were you. Black generic hubs, black spokes and black nipples. Red tyres to compliment the saddle. I got red Blizzard Sports from JE James recently for £7 each, think they’re out of stock now though.

  7.

the attack is aluminium and i do have the carbon seatpost (it is actually heavier than some ali ones!)

depending on how much money i have left, i may consider a different seat post. i would prefer not to have the graphics but i rode a fetish attack a few weeks ago and it was pretty nice. i've been offered a brand new frame for cost price too so i'm not going to turn it down :-)

i've asked on the london site to see if anyone has a long term opinion on how it rides/strength etc.

i'm not into deep V's at all. they're everywhere at the moment and i know halo make some tough mountain bike rims - for the money they seem like the best buy as far as wheels go. if they can survive the abuse of cycling through shawlands i'll be happy!

i will send you up a set of deep V's if you wish?

p.s - i did post the photo here then realised i was stealing you're thread so i put it in 'bikes n' faces'

  8.

ha ha! yes, ok - i like deep v's! i'm trying to keep the cost of the build down as much as possible so i've been talking myself out of a lot of parts!

the main expenses are the frame and wheels so far. i am tempted by a set of deep v's or a set of H plus rims but it will depend on budget!

if you're sticking with the halos how about the mercury deep rim for your rear?? ;-)

  11.

Getafix - if you're serious about the wheelbuilding offer, i may well take you up on that!

i'm pretty sure i'm going for the deep v's and either formula or halo hubs. (probably formula.)

serious question - how do i know what spoke lengths to order?

Theres a few spoke length calculators online, the dtswiss ones the best...

    http://www.dtswiss.com/SpokesCalc/Calculator.aspx

Its got tons of rims and hubs in its database and if its not there then you can manually enter the measurements from the parts.
Failing that just tell the store that you order the spokes from what hub/rim combo you are using and ask them to do the searching about for you. I'v done this when building bmx wheels and most places are happy to do the little bit of work to get your business.

Does that mean that you can pop a few links into my 1/8" chain then? I've got a 20T cog that I want to put on but I can't because my chain's not long enough.

Yeah I had to do that with my chain. Had to borrow a chaintool though because mine is no good for 1/8" chains.

Its pretty easy once you've done it once.

  13.

i have a chain tool that i think does 1/8" chains, its a park one so it should. You gonna be there on wednesday night rusty?

Yeah I'll be there. I don't have any links though. I might buy one of the shimano 1/8" breakaway links. I'll bring along my 20T cog on Wednesday anyway just in case. Do you have any 1/8" links?

If you could please bring that on Wednesday night.

I'd be very grateful. Then I can pop on my 20T cog.

  14.

i will do my best to remember the chain tool. i recommend split links, iv always found them to be far superior to reriveted links (reriveting done by myself and lbs) and you can always use 2 with a link or 2 between to allow quick lengthening/shortening of chain for different gearings.

  15.

Shit, i meant to offer you to borrow the chain tool for a bit. Sorry man.

While im here, how much can u get those velocitys for cuppa t?

Sorry I've not been checking this thread, no problem with the wheels, I'll build them if you want. Spoke calculators can be used for spoke length, you need to the effective rim diameter (erd) of the rim, spoke count and pattern and a few hub dimensions. My last build was a pair of velocity deep-v on on-one hubs. If you let me know what you want I'll calculate the spokes for you, I've also got some spare Halo black spoke nipples if you want to go all black.

I had considered the Edinburgh Bicycles course but after reading a few books I had a go myself. I built a jig out a brand new pair of mountainbike forks a friend in work had bought in error on e-bay for £1 and some other stuff out the scrap bin at work. After my first build I bought a dish tool to check the dish which was found to be perfect.

  16.

The wheel jig we had in halfords was kinda fucked which meant that wheel dish was checked by putting the wheel in a frame. Iv been looking for a jig on the bay but not seen anything cheap enough yet. The thing i miss most about halfords is all the spokes they had left over from the days when they had wheelbuilders employed in stores. :(

  17.

right - i'm off to work now - be back at the end of october so hopefully see some of you guys then!
