Hey...I've been dwelling on a purchase for too long and came across this: http://www.urbanexcess.com/p-6030-create-single-speed-fixed-gear-bike-blackblack.aspx

I don't want to spend more than £250 for my first bike and wondered from your experience/knowledge if the parts on this bike are decent enough to last? Cheers!

    I wouldn't touch that. It's a fashion toy.

If you want a good bike for little money then the Fuji Track is the one to be looking at. They're well built, have decent finishing kit and all you need to add is a front brake (the forks are already drilled.)

what he said. they are a death trap. most stories on the london forum involve the chain snapping and then other bits breaking pretty rapid too. avoid like the plague.

aswell as the fuji there is this from edinburgh bikes - http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?f%5FProductID=10808&f%5FSupersetQRY=C107&f%5FSortOrderID=1&f%5Fbct=c003155c002912

and try the lemond fillmore in alpine.

the create is a pile of wank, its really heavy and the wheelset is so poor.

the fuji track is a lovely bike for the price.

check out the for sale section on http://www.londonfgss.com there are always bargains popping up

gear bikes in the west end do their own basic steet fixed gear bike, not sure what the cost is though. for £250 you're really looking at 2nd hand or a road conversion (which will be old frame/fork anyway so still really second hand) Fuji is good out the box but you'll be looking for a new cog and a brake.

for a first fixed gear i'd go for building my own . £250 is plenty money for a budget/hack build .
my latest bike cost me a tenner , which is going to become fixed very shortly once i get a threaded back wheel .
as for wheels , i'd go for the suicide hub option (who needs lockrings anyhoo???) . in fact give me your £250 and i'll personally built you a fixed gear bike and you'll probably have £100 change left over . HA

You may not worry that much about using a suicide hub but I'd not go recommending it to fledgling fixed gear riders.

I'll take you up on this challenge on one condition: No suicide hub.

    Can you do it?

Edit: no, actually - I believe you and I don't need another bike!

yeah i would use one of my 700c disc wheels and either mount a cassette cog onto it or buy a proper cog for this use .
