today i was outside dales. locking up my crappy bike. old guy in his late 50's maybe even early 60's comes out with a specialized brochure stops and goes 'nice bike!, what is it? dya know that one thing i never got round to tryin was riding fixed gears'. stood and had a bit of chat about ratios etc and he was genuinly interested. said he had some shit hot specialized full carbon s-works number zipp wheels the lot cost him about 6K app. he also went onto say he had a garage with a few flying scots in and loads and loads of old dura ace bits, campag gears etc a career of old bits and all worth a mint. so he knew his stuff. i was sorely tempted to give him my number to see if we could come round and purchase stuff off him but thought it may of been a bit cheeky. as he was walking away i told him to get a fixed for winter he said' i may just do that'. he was also raving about big al at wheelcraft. there must be so many guys like that out there, how come i'm not related to them to get all there stuff. i have had similer chats before, infact one time a guy flagged me down whilst on the go to stop me and talk bikes i thought he was having some emergancy or somehting. anyway, anyone else had similar encounters or am i just a crazy magnet?
Last Thursday we had a drunk guy in Govan admiring the fixed-gears. "Take a look at them. Admire them. They were built for speed" was what got me.
The most I've had was:
"Hey, are those fixed wheel?"
(A friendly nod from ourselves)
"Mentalists..."
then he walked off.

I think euan's being pious rather than saying vox populi = drops are fast.
I hopped off my bike after hammering flat out and an old boy started to chat to me. Turns out he used to ride for a team and cycled all I've Europe fixed in the 50's!
I've had quite a few of these chats with old guys, it can be pretty cool to get the banter with them. Usually they comment on how nice it is to see a lugged steel frame about "these days". I used to pop round and see an old guy in the village nick-named Bill the Bike. He had some great chat, he was still riding his bike at 87 with a cigar out the side of his mouth the day before he clicked his heels.
i suppose this could be "spotted".. but last night i saw an older women, perhaps around 50-60 riding a vintage pashley frame just on Great Western Road.. it was in lovely condition
A couple of months ago I had a good chat with an older guy who spotted me waiting about with my Armstrong and came over to have a look. As above, he was a life-long cyclist and was really pleased to see the old frame in use and treated reasonably well. He actually said he had an old Armstrong catalogue featuring my Moth, so I gave him my card and he emailed me a copy of it a couple of days later, which was really cool.
I've put the scans up on my website: Armstrong Moth

Every time I take the Scot out in Glasgow it happens – I can't move for old('er', don't mean to be disrespectful) men trying to talk to me about it.
I bet!
