Care to enlighten me? I know in some American sports growth hormones are pretty rampant and hard to test for, but I'm not sure if they are useful in endurance sports like cycling.
Bernhard Kohl has admitted that he was in a doping 'programme' for over seven years by the time he was eventually caught and that he's been regularly doping since the age of nineteen. He thinks (and is surprised that he wasn't) that he should have tested positive over a hundred times during his career. (Also, Denis Menchov has been linked to the same doping 'ring' as Kohl.)
Merak:
Me too. However my naivety regarding Armstrong in particular has been changed by 'Bad Blood' (Jeremy Whittle)amongst other bedtime reading. I had been a fan of LA for many years. My admiration of his battle to fight and win against cancer remains but his reaction to Filippo Simeoni's attempts to win a stage in the tour after his testimony in court against Dr Ferrari, whom LA still refuses to condemn nailed it for me. Lets just say I will be happy when LA chucks it for good and I hope Contador et all destroy him in the Alps.
I feel the same. I respect his achievements (although he's far from being one of the greates ever riders) but I really don't like him. I never have done and he's acting like the school bully at the moment - I think Contador has the measure of him, he's not saying much but hopefully he'lll tear into him in the mountains.
rusty:Apparently Bad Blood is an awful book. I'd still like to read it though.
You should also read Rough Ride by Paul Kimmage.
He gives a very honest account of the doping he came across in his career and, as is the way in cycling, he's been rubbished and ignored since.

On the contrary, its a very well written account of a sports journalists disillusion with pro cycling. Dont take someone else's word for it, read it, then make your own mind up.

+1 Great read.
I'm going to get wired into Sex, Lies & Handlebar tape tonight.
rusty:I'm going to get wired into Sex, Lies & Handlebar tape tonight.
You do know there's a book called that?
(It's great - he was a right little rascal!)
The sex and lies are down. I can't really be bothered re-taping my bars tonight though ;)

I'd just incorporate the tape into the sex....(or lie to your girlfriend about buying it.)

'pwn' as they say on that internet.
*Heart.*
I missed the highlights of that stage cause I was in the pub... That's a amazing thing to watch...
never seen this on the BBC updates b4 -
1402: Oops. A bit of a smash in the peloton, caused by the TV helicopter getting too close and blowing riders about - or at least that's what I'm told. That's something that doesn't affect me on my commute, thankfully. Still, everyone's back on their bikes - I'll bring you more on that, and who was affected, when I find out.
I think today can only be described as beautiful timing. From what I can make out from text commentary Columbia timed the catch with very little work from the front.
euan:I think today can only be described as beautiful timing.
Wow!
When something is so beautiful it requires it's own syntax, you know it's been a special day.
edited.
euan:edited.
Too late - you've been quoted!
I edited your quote too.
My brain obviously got confused between saying beautifully timed and beautiful timing.
euan:I edited your quote too.
Fascist!
How good is Big George Hincapie?!
That was a phenomenal amount of work he put in for Cav today. He was alright too.....
Stage 5 in 1919 - 482km. Won by Jean Alavoine in 18h 54' 07". presumably on a fixed gear, rough roads and no support car. oh and a 2am start

Yeah, the Tour used to be crazy. It was all about super-human feats.
rusty:Yeah, the Tour used to be crazy. It was all about super-human feats.
I'd say it still is.
Johan Bruyneel and Armstrong having a go at Garmin via twitter yesterday was funny. Neither were happy that Garmin had brought the pace of the Peleton back up so Hincappie couldnae get the yellow.
whats everyone think about cavs diqualifification? A little harsh me thinks
"Thursday Wiggo will be in his element" - Bradley Wiggins 19/7/09
Man that was hilarious.
I really like Wiggins' Argyle bartape.
I haven't been able to watch since Friday - can someone give me a quick rundown of what I've missed? What's happened to Cav?!
Thor Hushovd of the cervelo Test team desqualified him from stage 14 because he wasent happy with his sprint, meaning that Thor kept the green kit, Cav. was back yesterday but has lost all his points and has been put to the back of the field. Stage 15 did see Brag "wiggo" wiggins bump up to 3rd overall tho, he did realy well yesterday and held a great position thoughout the entire race. hopefully should be able to hold on to that untill Paris...
Contador in yellow. Armstrong 1 min 30 behind. Wiggens in 3rd only about 20 sec behind him.
Cav came in 13th winning the bunch sprint a few stages ago, Thor complained because cav came off his line forcing Thor towards the barriers. Cav got the sprint points foethat stage taken off him an got placed last for that stage.
Did cav loose all his points? I thought he just lost the points for that stage.
he just lost them for that stage i thought? thats what itv said last night.
i dont know if it was purely cavs fault, the barriers really came in tight as well..
Looking at the webside (www.letour.fr) it seems that Cav's 'only' lost his points for that stage - he's eighteen behind now.
Looks like I'll have to dig out some highlights then!
I think Columbia were well aware of the situation of the barriers. Thor was not, and if he knew he wouldn't have taken the inside line.
stained jersey -

yeh my mistake, just the points from that stage...
You can see a series of interviews about the cav DQ from Thor and the commissaires followed by a helipcopter shot of the sprint in this video. Apparently there can be no appeal, even though from the helicopter shot it looks like the sprint was fairly legit.
ITV4 Highlights of Stage 14
Relevant coverage starts about 40 minutes in (you'll need to watch a few ads before it starts).
It looked fine from the helicopter shots - I just watched the highlights/week review and though the commisionaire had said he could appeal?
Did you see how hard Hushovd had to try to stop smiling when he was told of Cav's disqualification?
(I'm all up to date now, thanks!)
Commisinaire said he could appeal but as he made the decision and it is final, appeal is basically worthless...
Does anyone know what cav is talking about with the lady who died. I didn't quite follow what has gone down??
video on itv4 website-you need a plugin to watch tho.

I think it is fair to say the French don't particularly care about Cav so this would have likely been a likely great thing for them.
a police motorbike knocked her down.

A police motorbike hit a woman who was crossing the road, the bike then hit another two people.
'The woman, who was in her 60s, was hit as she crossed the road along the route of the 14th stage of the race, near Colmar in north-eastern France.'

cheers for that!
Cavendish is a wank. Hushovd is a nice guy. Cav should just suck it up and get on with it. If the commisaires agreed with Hushovd then that's all that matters. It's not a school playground. This is professional cycling. If Cav wants the jersey so badly he should have aimed for it in the first place. Stage wins are only significant to people who'll never win the tour.
To be fair, Cav did not deviate. He kept his line. If Hushovd knew about the barriers he would not have been going up the inside of Cav like that.
Yeah, helicopter shot shows him keeping his line and it's barriers that came in a touch... I'm not the biggest fan of Cavendish but there's not denying his talent...
Rusty is just defending Thor because he bought him a Rapha top.
(that said I would rather go for a pint with Thor than Cavendish)
